Elas representam uma fonte importante de entrada e sa\u00edda de energia na zona litor\u00e2nea, sendo uma das grandes respons\u00e1veis pelas modifica\u00e7\u00f5es da costa.<br \/>\nQuando chegam pr\u00f3ximas \u00e0 costa, as ondas sofrem altera\u00e7\u00f5es em sua geometria, modificando-se a partir do momento em que come\u00e7am a sentir o fundo. Isso ocorre quando a profundidade \u00e9 igual \u00e0 metade do comprimento de onda e a base passa ent\u00e3o a sofrer atrito com o fundo, fazendo com que a parte de cima se desloque mais r\u00e1pido e a onda v\u00e1 empinando at\u00e9 que finalmente arrebente, dissipando energia. \u00c9 somente a partir desse momento, da quebra da onda, que ela efetivamente transporta mat\u00e9ria, antes disso, somente energia \u00e9 transportada. \u00c9 por este motivo que os surfistas s\u00f3 conseguem surfar a onda quando ela come\u00e7a a quebrar.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: Um fen\u00f4meno comum em praias dissipativas, inclusive nas do litoral sergipano, s\u00e3o as correntes de retorno nos locais onde h\u00e1 irregularidades batim\u00e9tricas do fundo ou onde a altura das ondas \u00e9 menor. Segundo Galvin (in Hoefel, 1973), a arrebenta\u00e7\u00e3o \u00e9 caracterizada em quatro tipos:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,sans-serif;\"><em>progressiva ou deslizante<\/em> (spilling breaker): t\u00edpica de praias de baixa declividade, em que a onda \u201cdesliza\u201d, dissipando a energia numa larga faixa do perfil praial. S\u00e3o caracterizadas pela espuma e turbul\u00eancia na crista, produzindo uma massa de ar e \u00e1gua turbulenta que cai em frente da onda. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,sans-serif;\"><em>mergulhante ou tubular<\/em> (plungin breaker): t\u00edpica de praias de alta declividade, em que a onda formada \u00e9 caracterizada por ser arqueada, convexa atr\u00e1s e c\u00f4ncava na frente. Corresponde \u00e0 maior parte das ondas, com altura entre 0,5 e 1,4 m.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: comic sans ms,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Sudeste, ocorrem entre o m\u00eas de maio e o m\u00eas de julho.
